The Way of Shadows (Night Angel #1) by Brent Weeks
For Azoth, survival is precarious. Something you never take for granted. As a guild rat, he's grown up in the slums, and learned to judge people quickly - and to take risks. Risks like apprenticing himself to Durzo Blint.
But to be accepted, Azoth must turn his back on his old life and embrace a new identity and name. As Kylar Stern, he must learn to navigate the assassins' world of dangerous politics and strange magics - and cultivate a flair for death.
There's an idea here and its a decent world that Weeks creates but the characters and their personalities and interactions are a little lacking in appealing traits. It made it difficult to redeem the cast when they would do or say certain things that would put me off. I do like that this story and its writing could appeal to both males and females as you get your sort of love story angle in it but I think it could use a little more work. Its categorized as an adult novel but I believe it could be slated for YA/NA instead.
The Way of Shadows was good - not great but still worth the read.
